robplosions

robplosions.com

I spent fifty years exploding without knowing why.

I'm Rob. Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and ADHD at 50, in the middle of a COVID breakdown. Sixteen years off cocaine and heroin. Still working on the anger, the anxiety, and the bubble I hide in. This is where I write all of it down, the ugly parts too, with resources to help others like me.

rob·plo·sion

noun. What happened when I lost it and blew up at the people around me. My friend Kris Krüg named it twenty years ago. I've been trying to understand it ever since.

How I got here

The short version. Every stop links to the long one.

  1. Age 7

    My father dies

I was seven. A year later I was in therapy. The year after that, family therapy.

  2. 14 to 18

A social worker, then the door

A social worker at 14. I hurt myself in high school; the tattoos came later. At 18 I left, and stayed away from help for years.

    The bottom

I tried to end my life. I'm still here. That's the first thing this site is about.

    I checked myself in

I woke up in the ER at Lions Gate, in North Vancouver. After talking with the psychologist there, I chose to stay. A month of group therapy, counselling and meds.

  5.

    Session after session

Therapy, group therapy, art therapy, programs. Always a set number of sessions, paid by the system or insurance. Then nothing. Same issues.

  6. 2006

    Kris names it

Running an agency in Vancouver. I'd lose it and explode on people. My friend Kris Krüg called it a robplosion. It stuck.

Cocaine and heroin were part of the story. Sixteen years now without either.

    The breakdown

After a decade of avoiding help, everything fell apart. A social worker who gave a damn got me support, three diagnoses (ASD, BPD, ADHD) and tools that work.

  9. Today

    Now

Fifty years of weird tics, obsessions and blow-ups finally have a shape. I'm writing it all down.

The questions nobody likes asking

Straight answers first, my experience second.

Anger & meltdowns

What is the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum in adults?

A tantrum is goal-directed. The person wants something, and it usually stops when they get it or when nobody is watching. An autistic meltdown is an involuntary loss of…

Autism, late

Can you be diagnosed with autism at 50?

Yes. There is no upper age limit for an autism diagnosis. Autism is lifelong, so an assessment at 50, 60 or older looks for traits that were there all along. Expect…

You shouldn't have to take my word for it

So I collected the people who actually know what they're talking about.

Worth reading, worth using

Twenty books, tools and games I'd hand a friend. Some links pay this site a small commission.

Book

Unmasking Autism

Devon Price

My take. The book I wish someone had handed me decades ago. Written by an autistic psychologist, about the mask most of us didn't know we were wearing.

Good to know. Very identity-affirming. Some clinicians push back on its take on self-diagnosis.

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook

McKay, Wood, Brantley

My take. Distress tolerance, emotion regulation, the skills I wish I'd had before every robplosion. Works for cravings too.

Good to know. A workbook isn't full DBT with a therapist.

Tool

Apple AirPods Pro (noise cancelling)

Apple

My take. I swear by these. Half the time there's no music playing at all. Just noise cancelling on, and the world turns down a few notches. Does wonders on overload days.

Good to know. Not cheap, and they're made for the Apple world: some features work best with an iPhone.

Tool

10,000-lux light therapy lamp

My take. Québec winters are long and dark. Thirty minutes in the morning. Modest evidence, real difference for a lot of people.

Good to know. Talk to a doctor first if you have bipolar disorder: it can trigger hypomania. Check it's UV-filtered.
